The Wood River Reads Project has launched, and libraries around the Valley are promoting To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee for a community wide read and discussion.

The release of Go Set A Watchman is setting a cat among the literary pigeons this week. The term "cognitive dissonance" has been freely bandied about, particularly relating to Atticus Finch. After rereading To Kill a Mockingbird just last month, this librarian is quite looking forward to reading the new book, and the new conversation that it will generate. I note that the media are showing a number of cuts from the movie--I'm thinking that the generous spin in the movie version may be obscuring troubling aspects of the paternal character in the book.

I wonder if anyone has done a study on how many people have just seen the movie, and not read the book?

The new book comes out Tuesday--reviews are already trickling out, but I'm trying to avoid them before the book arrives. I will be shelving Go Set A Watchman on the lay-down date at The Community Library. And hopefully, to quote Suzette Hayden Elgin, "…and Then There'll be Fireworks."
